  1. Major Barbra was my favorite thing that I went to over this semester. It made me think quite a bit and the acting was not bad. There were two people who did not know their lines (the parents) but everyone else knew their lines and did well for the most part. The actors who played Stephen and Adolphus were the best, but Barbra was very good, too. Even the parents were good, though they had to have books with their lines the whole time. I have a friend who works in the theater department, and she had warned me that it was not good, but boy was she wrong! The plot had me wrapped in after the first five minutes. It’s great to be able to watch performances that your friends are in. At one point in the play, one character pushed down another, and I legitimately thought that he had shoved her down full force, and later when he punches her, I literally flinched while she got hit. It was very convincing, and her earring even fell off. I talked to the actress later and she laughed, because the guy who “hit” her is such a nice and caring guy normally, but he portrayed the part well enough that she almost got scared during their rehearsals. Stephen was probably my favorite character. He seemed almost weak in how much he tended to his mother, without realizing that she was not being good to him. I liked that the play had a character who had no romantic relationships. Like most movies today have to have people who are looking for love. Stephen was not concerned with finding a wife, he just wanted to do something meaningful with his life, and he became a journalist because of it. I also liked that most of the actors were played by the perfect character. Adolphus was played by a friend of mine who can always be in charge of a conversation. He always talks about his major, as Adolphus does of his profession, and they even had the same basic personality. Sarah was played by some high school student when I saw it, but the college student who did it the other times would have been perfect. It’s like the character was made for her. She could just act uninterested in everything that was going on, but still be a character and have some depth. Stephen was played by someone who I don’t know as well, but who seems to have a similar personality. Stephen was not exactly shy, but he was not the most confident in the way he spoke, even when he knew what he was talking about. The girl who played the mom is perfect for those kind of roles. A controlling, sassy, and strong woman who never takes crap from anyone, it was well done.
