2012 Honors Road Trip, Destination: OKC

On Friday, September 21st, Dr. Benton, Dr. Latimore, and 25 Honors students joined Dr. Edwards and 6 students from his classes in the Communication and Performance Studies program to form a five-vehicle road-trip caravan. Our destination: the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, the OKC National Memorial, La Luna Mexican Cafe, and the Myriad Gardens, where we watched the Oklahoma Shakespeare in the Park performance of Othello.

ECU Artwalk 2012!

At the first All-HSA meeting of the Fall semester, Dr. Brad Jessop, Director of ECU's School of Fine Arts, took Honors Program students on an artwalk (OK, art-trot) around campus, pointing out some the many works of fine art that many of us too often overlook on our way to and from class.  Over the course of the evening, Dr. Jessop talked to us about:

•his Indiana-Jones-like search for the Lost Treasures of the Linscheid Museum (coming soon to a campus near you!);

•the legendary origins of Roary's pilgrimage to Ada from Stillwater;

•the flowerbed that lies just a few feet about the campus's communication nexus (and "Ascension," the ECU sculpture that almost brought that nexus to its knees);

•the European consensus that the Father of Minimalist Art is an ECU graduate and a Native American (who failed his drawing class here!) and doesn't get the same love from American textbook writers;

•the ECU artist who learned to think laterally and ended up as Vice-President of Nokia Phones;

•the mysterious Matisse study that may or may not be a missing rung in the master's ladder (we say "yes!"). And, of course, as the TV commercials say, "much, much more."   Our next meeting is Monday, October 5th.  We'll be in the Estep.  Hope to see you there!

For Tomorrow We Picnic!

Honors students and professors enjoyed good food, good company, and good games that tested their brain-power at this year's annual Honors picnic.
We're not posing.
We naturally put our arms around each other whenever six or more of us get together to talk.
 From left to right:  Kelsey Mantooth, Morgan Hicks, Taylor Jones, Anna Talkington, Rachel Nicholas and Chelsi Norris.
If I just add a "U" there, I can spell "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" and hit a triple letter score ...
Derek Reed contemplates the perfect place to move his tiles in a game of Scrabble.
"So, Chelsi, what's the distance from the Earth to the Moon?"
Trevor Sutton puts Chelsi Norris's brain to the test in a game of Trivial Pursuit.  Honors Committee member Dr. Martha Pennington bites her tongue.
"That's easy! Everyone knows the distance from the Earth to the Moon is 238,900 miles."
Laura Asaro shows off her Cranium game skills by answering the question posed by Tell Jordan while fellow teammate Casey Williamson looks on. Opposing team members Nik Razo, Matthew Parham, and Michael Womack contemplate their next move in this epic battle of brains.

Firestarter Kruz Anderson serves 'em hot; HSA President Nikki Dickerson pacifies the hungry hordes.
